A 4.6 on the Richter scale earthquake was recorded at 2:30 a.m. (local time) on Tuesday in a sea region between the islands of Santorini and Amorgos, an area known for frequent seismic activity.
According to the revised reading from the Athens Observatory’s Geodynamic Institute, the quake occurred at 2:30 a.m. and was located 12 kilometers southwest of the Arkesini settlement on the island of Amorgos. The tremor’s depth was measured at 7.7 kilometers.
The tectonic plates beneath the maritime region between the southern Cyclades islands—including Amorgos, volcanic Santorini, and nearby areas—have generated numerous earthquakes over time, though most are minor. This latest tremor, however, was the strongest seismic event recorded in the area in quite some time.
