Greece’s domestic fuel market is showing clear signs of cooling off, even if the process is moving at two different speeds. While price reductions at the wholesale level have not yet been passed on in full to the retail market, the overall direction is consistently downward, and more gas stations are expected to lower their prices for both unleaded gasoline and diesel in the weeks ahead.

After a prolonged stretch of intense price hikes, Attica is beginning to offer consumers some meaningful relief. In several areas across the greater Athens basin, the price of unleaded gasoline has already dipped below the psychologically significant threshold of 2 euros per liter. At the same time, diesel prices are reinforcing the broader downward trend, with a number of stations selling it at under 1.65 euros per liter.

The Geography of High Prices

Despite this positive shift, the picture changes dramatically depending on the region. Rural areas and, above all, the Greek islands continue to struggle with exceptionally high prices.

Speaking on the MEGA television program “Society Now,” Nikos Papageorgiou, president of the Attica Gas Station Owners Association, urged consumers to always focus on the average price rather than the lowest available. According to him, in major urban centers such as Athens, Thessaloniki, and Patras, the average price of unleaded gasoline currently stands at around 2.10 euros per liter.

According to data compiled by gas station operators, the highest prices nationwide are recorded in the following regions:

  • Cyclades: Close to 2.28 euros/liter

  • Rethymno (Crete): Close to 2.18 euros/liter
  • Corfu: At 2.17 euros/liter
