A 9-year-old student was seriously injured in northern Greece when a firework exploded in his hand during New Year’s celebrations in the village of Amaxades, in the municipality of Iasmos, Rhodope.

The boy was immediately taken to the General Hospital of Xanthi, where doctors had to amputate one of his fingers due to the severity of the injury. In addition, he is undergoing examinations for potential damage to his eyes, as fragments from the firework caused injuries to his vision.

The child remains hospitalized under close medical supervision. Local police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, as authorities work to determine how the accident occurred.
