Aktor Group has completed a major restoration project at the Athens Olympic Sports Center (OAKA), finishing maintenance, repair and replacement works on sections of the steel structures at the complex’s two main entrances, the Wall of Nations and the Agora, approximately 18 months after signing the contract.
The project forms part of a broader program to upgrade and protect some of OAKA’s most recognizable infrastructure, including architectural elements designed by noted Spanish architect and civil engineer Santiago Calatrava.

According to the company, engineers and work crews carried out extensive restoration works on the three monumental structures, including sandblasting and high-pressure water treatment to remove corrosion, deteriorated coatings and other signs of wear and tear. New anti-corrosion protection systems were installed, while corroded bolts were replaced with galvanized connectors matching the original specifications. Additional localized interventions were carried out to improve drainage and address concrete damage, weld defects and cracking.
The works are part of a wider effort to modernize Greece’s largest sports complex, which has undergone extensive inspections, maintenance and safety upgrades in recent years following concerns over the condition of several aging structures dating back to the 2004 Athens Olympics.
Over the past year, authorities have accelerated a wider renovation program at OAKA, including upgrades to sports facilities, structural monitoring systems and the restoration of Calatrava’s iconic steel constructions. The modernization drive gained momentum after detailed technical assessments highlighted the need for long-term maintenance and investment to preserve the complex’s infrastructure and ensure its continued safe operation.
Recent contracts have also been signed for major restoration works on the stadium and velodrome roofs as part of a wider redevelopment plan for the Olympic venue.
