The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy has dismissed the port chief of Alonnisos following a serious incident that occurred at the island’s port on April 27, 2025. During the boarding process of a passenger ferry, a mooring line snapped, triggering panic and posing a significant safety threat to both passengers and crew.

According to reports, the vessel had begun boarding vehicles despite strong winds. As a car was approaching the loading ramp, the ship suddenly drifted from its mooring position after one of the ropes securing it gave way. The vehicle narrowly avoided plunging into the sea.

Fortunately, the alertness and composure of the driver prevented what could have been a tragic accident. A few minutes later, the ship was able to re-dock and continue boarding.

In response to the incident, the Minister of Maritime Affairs, Vassilis Kikilias, ordered an official inquiry by the Hellenic Coast Guard to investigate the circumstances and determine responsibility.

“Alongside the directive to the Coast Guard Chief to initiate a sworn administrative inquiry, the Port Chief of Alonnisos has been removed from his post. This was an extremely dangerous event that endangered lives. Let me be absolutely clear: when it comes to safety, there is zero tolerance,” Kikilias emphasized.

Initial assessments by industry experts have pointed to lapses on both sides of the operation. The ferry had reportedly used only one mooring line instead of the two typically required in rough weather conditions, while the local port authority permitted vehicle loading under hazardous circumstances, despite strong winds and heavy swells.
