Another incident involving e-scooters and injuries sustained by minors while riding them was reported on Sunday afternoon from western Crete, as two 15-year-old boys were hurt after their two-wheeler crashed.

According to local reports, the two minors were riding together on a single scooter while traveling downhill when, under circumstances still under investigation, the driver lost control of the platform, which veered off the road, throwing both teens to the ground.

A fatal accident involving a 12-year-old youth occurred this month in the Aspropyrgos township, west of Athens proper.

Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene, and the injured boys were transported from the municipality of Platania by ambulance to a hospital in nearby Chania for treatment. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The accident comes amid growing concern in Greece over a sharp rise in electric scooter crashes involving minors. In recent weeks, several serious incidents — including fatal accidents and hospitalizations of teenagers — have intensified pressure on authorities to tighten regulations governing scooter use. Government officials have warned that many young riders use scooters without helmets, without formal road safety knowledge, or protective infrastructure such as dedicated lanes.

Citizens’ Protection Minister (public order portfolio) Michalis Chrisochoidis last week said the government is preparing new legislation that could ban minors from using electric scooters on public roads, while also introducing mandatory insurance requirements and stricter enforcement of helmet and parking rules. Officials have also discussed limiting scooter use by underage riders to pedestrian areas and public squares, arguing that the growing number of accidents has made the issue a national road safety concern.
