A state of emergency has been declared on the Greek island of Astypalaia due to severe water shortages, highlighting growing concerns over resource availability in parts of the country.

The measure, which will remain in effect for three months, was approved by Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou, following consultations with relevant national authorities responsible for water and energy regulation, as well as island policy.

Officials said the decision aims to address urgent supply challenges and enable faster implementation of measures to manage the crisis.

At the same time, authorities have extended an existing state of emergency on the island of Patmos for an additional three months, citing continued water scarcity.
