The Municipality of Athens is taking a small but meaningful step to make the Greek capital more wildlife-friendly. In collaboration with the Hellenic Ornithological Society, the city has begun installing specially designed nests for swallows and swifts on municipal buildings.

The initiative is part of the “Wings over Cities” program, which aims to support bird populations in urban environments, protect biodiversity and encourage public awareness about the importance of coexisting with nature in densely populated areas.

The nests are being placed on a range of public buildings, including schools and daycare centers, helping create safe spaces for these migratory birds to rest and breed. Swallows and swifts, long associated with the arrival of spring in Greece, have seen their natural nesting spots decline due to modern construction and urbanization.

Athens Deputy Mayor for Environment and Green Spaces, Georgios Apostolopoulos, highlighted the initiative in a recent post, noting that the city is “installing nests for swallows and swifts on municipal buildings, schools and nurseries… a project for the city’s flying residents.”
