The Municipality of Athens will temporarily close 11 businesses for failing to comply with public space regulations. The closures are scheduled for Friday, October 10, and are part of the city’s ongoing effort to enforce the law fairly across all establishments.

Athens Mayor Charis Doukas emphasized the importance of equal treatment for all residents and businesses, stating, “Public space belongs to everyone. We will not allow a city with double standards. Enforcing the law is our duty to the city and its people.”

According to Deputy Mayor for Municipal Police and Public Spaces, Thomas Georgiadis, 23 businesses were closed by the municipal authorities in September alone for similar violations. Since the beginning of 2025, Athens has conducted over 130 temporary closures.

The temporary closures on October 10 will vary in duration:

  • 2 businesses for 10 days
  • 1 business for 6 days
  • 3 businesses for 5 days
  • 2 businesses for 4 days
  • 1 business for 3 days
  • 2 businesses for 2 days

Most of the affected businesses (10 out of 11) are located in the city center, within Athens’ main commercial district, while one is situated in the Ampelokipi area.

The city’s enforcement highlights its commitment to maintaining public spaces for all residents and visitors, ensuring compliance with regulations while keeping the commercial heart of Athens orderly and accessible.
