A 70-year-old Austrian national was found injured on Monday evening in a rugged mountain area between the villages of Dikorifo and Kipoi in the Zagori region of northwestern Greece, after reportedly losing control of his motorcycle during a group excursion.
According to authorities and local media reports, the accident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. on a remote road in Ioannina prefecture, within the Pindus mountain range and near the border with Albania.
The Austrian rider had been traveling with a group of 12 fellow Austrian motorcyclists touring the Zagori region, a mountainous region known for its villages of stone residences, deep gorges and alpine landscapes. The area lies northeast of the city of Ioannina and is part of the Vikos–Aoos National Park, one of Greece’s best-known natural habitats.
It’s unclear how the motorcyclist reportedly lost control of his bike and overturned on a difficult stretch of road between Dikorifo and Kipoi. Dikorifo is a small mountain settlement built on the southern slopes of central Zagori, while Kipoi is one of the region’s best-known traditional villages, located near the Vikos Gorge and famous for its historic stone bridges dating back to the Ottoman era.
His companions immediately contacted emergency services, prompting a major rescue operation involving 27 firefighters and first responders from Ioannina.
Shortly before 8 p.m., firefighters and an emergency physician succeeded in reaching the injured tourist and administering first aid at the scene.
