Μake us preferred on Google A 13-year-old girl is hospitalized with multiple fractures after falling from the fifth floor of a hotel in central Thessaloniki early Monday.
The girl is being treated at Ippokrateio Hospital and is not in life-threatening condition, according to the report. She is scheduled to undergo a critical spinal surgery on Tuesday.
The fall was partially broken by an awning, which helped prevent more serious consequences.
Girl tried to follow men down pipe
According to initial assessments, the girl was in a hotel room with two men from Afghanistan.
Hotel staff reportedly realized that the girl was a minor and sent a staff member to the room. After the staff member knocked on the door, the two men fled.
The girl’s brother, speaking exclusively to Greek broadcaster MEGA, said the two men escaped by climbing down the hotel’s drainage pipe.
He said his sister tried to follow them but slipped and fell.
“They got scared, they tried to climb down the pipe and my sister slipped,” he said.
The brother also said his sister had been with another girl, who was already downstairs. According to his account, the girl saw police and left.
“I don’t know who these two [men] are. I don’t know whether she knew them or not. She knew one of them, a friend of hers,” he told MEGA.
Police investigate circumstances of fall
A video released by MEGA appears to capture a woman shouting, “They threw the girl.”
Police are examining all possible scenarios as they investigate the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities have launched a search for the two men. A criminal case is being prepared against one of them on suspicion of felony-level endangerment.
Police are expected to obtain further information directly from the 13-year-old. She will give a statement in the presence of a child psychologist once her medical condition allows it.
