Celebrations are ramping up as carnival weekend is mere hours away. Schools all over the country have already celebrated with costume days, while older ages are seeking masquerade parties and costumes. While rooted in faith, carnival in Greece remains one of the most inclusive national holidays. Come as you are, be who you want to be, no one will blink an eye.
If you’re feeling unprepared for this weekend, don’t fret. There is still plenty of time to find a cool costume, pick a destination and experience Greek carnival together with the locals.
Choosing your costume
A beloved tradition of carnival is picking out your costume. Many locals opt to DIY-ing a costume representative of a current meme, celebrity or pop culture moment. As it is right around Eurovision selection season, it wouldn’t be surprising if one of the most worn costumes of the season is a take on Akyla’s stage look for “Ferto”. Remember, tongue-in-cheek humor thrives during carnival season so don’t be afraid to go all out. If there was ever a time to step out of your comfort zone, carnival weekend is it.

Picking your parties
It is not a shame to admit that not all parties are to everyone’s liking, which is why Athenians are especially lucky. Pretty much every bar, restaurant and store is having their own distinctive carnival bash. Death Disco near Psyrri square is known to have some of the most fun, themed parties all throughout the year and carnival is no exception. This Friday they’re focusing on a Y2K oldies and greatest hits, with more themed parties to come this weekend.

Even if you are not the crazy costume type, there are plenty of options for you. Certain masquerade parties, like the two-day event taking place at Poquito Cafe-Bar, simply call for “formal attire” and a mask of your choice. More formal parties do require you check in or reserve a table, so be sure to call ahead and book your spot!
Bar and event space Romantso will also be hosting several DJs this weekend, starting this Friday at 10 pm with the party scheduled to go until dawn.

Most businesses in Athens tend to announce their upcoming events on social media, so be sure to check your favorite places’ Instagram or X.
Carnival parades
Athens will be hosting its big carnival parade through Syntagma and Kotzia square, on Sunday 22nd February starting at 5 pm. Music, dancing, and a live radio broadcast from local radio station that will end in a big party. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes (or maybe bring some along if you have a costume requiring eccentric footwear) and your festive carnival spirit!
