Three cars drove the wrong way along the Egnatia tollway in northeastern Greece on Thursday afternoon, narrowly avoiding a head-on collision with an oncoming truck near the Kipi border crossing with Turkey, according to local media reports.
The incident unfolded on the carriageway leading toward the customs checkpoint, where the driver of a truck captured the vehicles on a dashboard camera as they suddenly appeared in the opposing lane. The footage shows the truck driver taking evasive action at the last moment to avoid a potentially serious crash.
According to the reports, two of the vehicles carried Turkish license plates and a third Greek registration. No injuries were immediately reported.
The incident has renewed concerns over road safety on the Egnatia tollway, one of Greece’s busiest east-west motorways and a major freight corridor linking the port of Igoumenitsa with the Turkish border. Authorities have repeatedly warned that wrong-way driving remains among the most dangerous traffic violations because of the high speeds involved and the increased likelihood of fatal head-on collisions.
