Greece is set for a sharp change in weather from today, June 23, 2026, as temperatures retreat following the hot southerly winds that pushed the mercury as high as 43°C in parts of the country.

After days of extreme heat, temperatures are expected to fall by as much as 10 degrees, returning to more seasonal levels and bringing welcome relief from the heatwave. Local rain and isolated thunderstorms are forecast across the eastern mainland, the Sporades, Evia and the northeastern Aegean islands, with conditions expected to gradually improve from the afternoon, according to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY).

Winds will strengthen from northerly directions, reaching 4 to 6 Beaufort and locally up to 7 Beaufort in the southeastern Aegean. Temperatures will peak at 32-33°C, rising locally to 34-35°C in mainland areas, Crete and the Dodecanese.

From Friday, rainfall is expected to spread to more areas, while temperatures will range between 28°C and 34°C. The weather will improve again over the weekend, although winds will remain strong at up to 7 Beaufort, with temperatures edging slightly higher.

Today, most of the rest of the country will enjoy generally clear skies, while cloud cover will be more variable and occasionally heavier in the north and east, bringing scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms before gradually easing later in the day.
