A dead infant was found in a garbage bin in the city of Thessaloniki on Friday, the second case in the past ten days of an abandoned baby.

The grim discovery of the body of the newborn was made by an owner of a food truck, who reportedly was opening her business when she noticed the infant’s body in a trash bin behind the vehicle.

The woman immediately notified the police, who cordoned off the area upon arriving on the scene. Officers began collecting evidence to determine the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death. Authorities are also working to identify the baby’s mother.

Speaking to reporters, the food truck owner said the baby was 12-13 cm and believed it was most likely aborted by the mother.

Initial, unconfirmed reports suggest that the infant was found with the placenta attached, raising further questions about the birth and abandonment.

Officers from the crime unit of the Oraiokatsro police department are continuing their investigations with a forensic examination.
