No less than 51 seismic tremors were recorded on Friday after a moderate 5.7-magnitude on the Richter scale earthquake struck off southeast Crete in the early morning, prompting concern across the island’s eastern regions.

According to the Geodynamic Institute of Athens, the main quake occurred just before 6:30 a.m., with its epicenter located about 23 km southwest of the Goudouras site in the Sitia region.

A second moderate quake measuring 5.0 was recorded at 11:58 a.m. (09.58 GMT), pinpointed 10 km south of Goudouras. The shallow focal depth of 7.7 km made the tremor widely felt across multiple areas.

Local officials report no damage so far, but the ongoing seismic activity has caused unease among residents.
Sitia Mayor Giorgos Zervakis said the situation is being closely monitored.
