Greek motorists beginning their Easter holiday journeys are facing high fuel prices, with industry representatives warning that any significant relief at the pump is unlikely to materialize in the short term.

Fuel costs remain elevated across the country, adding pressure to households travelling during one of the busiest holiday periods of the year.

Fuel prices remain above 2 euros per liter

According to the president of Greece’s federation of petrol station owners, the nationwide average price of unleaded petrol is currently around €2.04 per liter, while diesel is priced at approximately €2.01 per liter.

In several regions, prices are even higher, further increasing the cost of long-distance travel for motorists leaving urban centers ahead of the holiday break.

Market fluctuations and short-term volatility

Industry officials noted that recent fluctuations in international oil markets have created instability in retail pricing. Earlier this month, diesel prices briefly fell by around 20 cents per liter, but part of that reduction was quickly offset by subsequent increases in wholesale costs.

The federation representative stressed that although a government subsidy of 20 cents per liter remains in place for a limited period, it only partially cushions consumers from wider market pressures.

He added that rapid daily changes in crude oil prices do not immediately translate into lower prices at fuel stations, as several trading sessions are typically required before trends are reflected in the retail market.

When price relief could arrive

While international oil prices have recently shown signs of decline, experts caution that this does not automatically lead to immediate reductions for consumers.

According to industry estimates, sustained downward movement would be required before any meaningful drop at the pump becomes visible, with the first potential reductions expected after the Easter holiday period, once trading activity resumes fully.

However, representatives emphasize that no precise forecast can be made regarding the size or timing of any future decreases.
