Greek authorities carried out a large-scale police operation in Crete on Thursday as part of an investigation into allegedly fraudulent agricultural subsidies. Fourteen people have been detained for questioning, and multiple homes across the island have been searched since early morning.
The case involves suspected illegal payments from Greece’s agricultural payments agency, with investigators examining whether individuals received subsidies through falsified declarations.
According to early reports from local media, the operation was led by a specialized police unit often referred to as the “Greek FBI,” which is tasked with investigating major financial and corruption-related offences.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials are continuing to review records and documentation linked to the suspected subsidy fraud. Authorities have indicated that formal announcements will be issued later in the day as more details become available.
The agricultural payments agency at the center of the probe is responsible for distributing EU and national farming subsidies—a system that has faced scrutiny in the past over issues of transparency and oversight.
