A large fire broke out Friday afternoon, September 18, at a warehouse in a lot in Renti, near Athens, with firefighters battling flames amid large quantities of flammable materials including tires and wooden pallets.

The fire broke out at the intersection of 28th October Street and Stratigou Makrygianni Street, close to the national highway.

Firefighters respond

Twelve firefighters were initially operating at the scene with four fire engines, with additional forces being deployed.

The Municipality of Renti also mobilized a water tanker to assist the Fire Service.

Authorities said there was a risk that the fire could spread to a neighboring undeveloped plot covered with dense vegetation.

The Piraeus Fire Investigation Unit was also deployed to investigate the cause of the fire.

Heavy black smoke has made the air in the area difficult to breathe.

112 alert issued

Authorities sent an emergency 112 alert to people in the wider Renti area because of the fire.

The message urged residents to remain indoors, close doors and windows, stay alert and follow instructions from authorities, warning that smoke was moving toward the area.
