Four passenger flights across Europe, two of them from the UK, were checked by authorities on Tuesday after a string of suspected bomb threats. Officials have not said whether the incidents are connected, and no one has claimed responsibility.

London flight diverted to Warsaw-Modlin

A LOT Polish Airlines Boeing 737 MAX flying from London Heathrow to Warsaw Chopin Airport received a warning at 8:54 a.m. GMT. Seven minutes later, it made an unscheduled landing at Warsaw-Modlin, the Polish capital’s second airport, with 181 people on board.

Modlin airport spokesperson Adam Szabłowski told tvn24.pl that the plane landed at 10:01 a.m. local time and that the airport had been shut while staff waited for bomb disposal teams. The aircraft was moved to a designated area, where it was to stay until authorities cleared it. Bomb disposal experts examined the plane and passengers’ luggage.

Passengers and crew were kept in the arrivals hall during the checks. Modlin, which mainly serves budget airlines and sits about 22 miles from Warsaw, later reopened, though the section where the plane was parked and several other areas stayed closed until further notice.

Copenhagen flight checked at Chopin

A second threat targeted an SAS flight from Copenhagen to Warsaw Chopin, Danish media reported. The plane landed as scheduled and was inspected. SAS confirmed it touched down safely and that all passengers got off. A Chopin airport spokesperson said one runway on the apron was closed, but the airport stayed open and operations were not seriously disrupted.

Ryanair plane lands in Murcia

In Spain, Ryanair flight FR4116 from Manchester made an emergency landing at Murcia-Corvera Airport after another threat. Francisco Lucas, the Spanish government’s delegate in the Murcia region, said the flight carried 121 people, including 114 passengers and seven crew members. He said the aircraft was being inspected and security procedures were underway. The local fire department was also called to the airport. Local media said the incident happened around 10:50 a.m. local time.

Israel flight checked in Sofia

Around midday, Bulgarian media reported that a flight from Israel landed in Sofia after a bomb threat arrived by email. Lyubomir Nikolov, chief secretary of Bulgaria’s Interior Ministry, told the BTA news agency that counterterrorism units were searching the plane for explosives.

Wizz Air scare one day earlier

The incidents follow a Monday scare involving a Wizz Air flight from London Luton to Sofia. After a mid-air bomb threat, the plane was escorted by a Hungarian fighter jet and made an emergency landing at Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport. Hungarian Defense Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendis confirmed his country supplied the jet. Wizz Air said authorities carried out security checks on the aircraft and passengers and found nothing.

Wider security concerns

The threats come amid rising concern in Europe over hybrid attacks on infrastructure since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. In August, an explosive-laden drone was discovered near a Ukrainian plane at Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany, leading to a counterterrorism investigation. Germany blamed Russia for the incident. Moscow has repeatedly denied involvement in sabotage or hybrid warfare and has not commented on Tuesday’s events.
