Athens has good reason to follow this year’s US midterm elections closely, as seven Greek American candidates are running for seats in the House of Representatives and the Senate. The community is well represented among both Republicans and Democrats, a sign of how active Greek Americans have become in Washington politics.

With the global landscape shifting quickly, Greek American representation in Congress is seen as especially important. Lawmakers there make key decisions on security in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, arms sales, energy policy, and international trade.

Florida

In Florida, home state of President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, longtime Republican Rep. Gus Bilirakis is running for reelection to the House. Bilirakis, whose family comes from the island of Kalymnos, has served in Congress for many years and is active in efforts to promote Greek interests. In 2024, he was widely mentioned as a possible US ambassador to Greece, but with Republicans holding only a narrow House majority, Trump chose Kimberly Guilfoyle for the post instead.

Also in Florida, Republican Rep. Mike Haridopolos is seeking reelection. Another candidate is Republican Rep. Jimmy Patronis, who until recently served as the state’s chief financial officer and is considered a major political figure in Florida with Trump’s backing. Patronis first won his House seat in a 2025 special election, held after Rep. Matt Gaetz resigned when he was in line to become US attorney general.

Nevada

In Nevada, Democratic Rep. Dina Titus is running for reelection to the House. She is regarded as one of the most experienced members of Congress and keeps close track of issues involving Greece and Cyprus.

Titus, whose roots trace back to Trikala, is one of the leading voices of the Greek American community in Congress. A few weeks ago, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis honored her, along with five other Greek Americans, for their contributions to Greece and to relations between Athens and Washington.

New York

In New York, Republican Rep. Nicole Malliotakis is seeking reelection to the House. Malliotakis, whose family comes from Sitia in Crete, is the only Republican representing New York City, a traditional Democratic stronghold.

She visits Greece often, plays a leading role in the Congressional Hellenic Caucus, and is a close ally of Trump. During the president’s recent visit to New York, she was at his side throughout.

New Hampshire

In New Hampshire, Democratic Rep. Chris Pappas is running for the Senate. If elected, he would bring Greek American representation back to the chamber after several years without it. Pappas, who has family roots in Thessaly and Macedonia, has been active on issues involving US-Greece relations and US policy toward Turkey. He faces Republican John E. Sununu for an open seat in a race that has become one of a handful nationwide that could decide control of the chamber.

Also in New Hampshire, Democratic Rep. Maggie Goodlander is running for a second term in the House. She secured her party’s nomination and faces Republican Lily Tang Williams, who lost to Goodlander when the two met in the 2024 general election. Goodlander’s family comes from Grevena, and she is married to Jake Sullivan, who served as national security adviser under President Joe Biden.

About a year ago, Goodlander was one of six Democratic lawmakers targeted by Trump after they appeared in a video urging members of the military to refuse illegal orders. Trump responded by accusing the group of seditious behavior that he said was punishable by death, a statement that drew strong backlash.
