Greek police and the Hellenic Coast Guard have launched a security operation aboard the Crown Iris after reports that an explosive device had been placed inside the cruise ship.
The Panama-flagged ship, with 1,537 people – of 940 passengers and 597 crew members – on board, is currently docked at the island of Syros.
According to Greek media reports, port authorities were notified of the possibility of an explosive device located inside the ship’s hull, prompting an immediate security response.
Coast Guard officers are conducting inspections of the vessel, assisted by a specially trained explosives-detection dog and a diver. A specialized team from the Hellenic Coast Guard’s Underwater Operations Unit was also expected to arrive at the scene to assist with the search.
The Crown Iris, owned by Israeli cruise line Mano Maritime, has repeatedly been the target of protests during its calls at Greek ports. The investigation is ongoing with no confirmation that an explosive device has been found.
The cruise ship, scheduled to depart from Syros to Haifa, Israel later on Tuesday, has been the focus of protests and security threats several times since 2025 during it calls Greek ports. Key incidents include those at Syros in 2025, Rhodes, Crete, Kefalonia, Corfu and Piraeus in 2026.
