A 31-year-old woman died on Tuesday while kitesurfing on the holiday island of Rhodes.

According to local press reports, the incident occurred off the island’s popular Kremasti beach. The woman, a Bulgarian national vacationing on Rhodes, was pulled from the waters in the Ialyssos district unconscious.

The circumstances surrounding the tragic incident were still sketchy in the evening.

The victim was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where physicians declared her dead.

An investigation was commenced by police into the circumstances surrounding the watersports-related fatality, with initial reports pointing to pathological reasons and not an injury or drowning. An autopsy has been ordered.

Such sea sports concessions in Greece are usually licensed by municipalities or port authority funds, although in the case the victim apparently used her own gear.
