A forensic examination has shed new light on a double homicide in the coastal Longos settlement along the northern Peloponnese, revealing the extent of the violence inflicted on a 54-year-old woman and her 26-year-old son.
The case is the latest to shock public opinion in the country.
Authorities have charged a 65-year-old Italian national, reportedly the woman’s longtime partner, in connection with the killings. He was the only other person known to have been inside the residence at the time of the attack and remains in custody pending his appearance before an investigating magistrate on Friday.
According to forensic findings, the 26-year-old victim suffered a gunshot wound to the right temple and six stab wounds to the chest. His mother sustained 20 stab wounds, leading investigators to describe the attack as particularly brutal.
The suspect has reportedly given inconsistent accounts during questioning, while continuing to deny any involvement in the killings.
The motive remains unclear. According to information cited by local media, relatives told investigators the couple may have been experiencing difficulties in their relationship. Authorities are also examining whether tensions arose after the victim’s son, who had been living in Berlin, recently returned to Greece and may have planned to take his mother back to Germany. The 26-year-old had arrived in the country just two days before the killings.
Police investigators are also exploring the possibility that financial disputes played a role. Witness statements reportedly indicate that the suspect and the 54-year-old victim had been involved in disagreements over financial matters. Concerned by the situation, the woman had allegedly contacted her son in Germany and asked him to return to Greece.
Evidence collected at the scene contributed to the suspect’s arrest. Police reportedly found freshly washed personal items belonging to the 65-year-old, including underwear and a towel bearing stains that are being analyzed by forensic laboratories.
Authorities also believe a struggle may have occurred inside the residence, near the coastal town of Aigio. Crime-scene investigators documented signs of a disturbance and damage to furniture, including a broken piece of furniture in a bedroom.
The case has attracted national attention amid broader concerns over violent crime and domestic violence in Greece.
