A FRONTEX search and rescue operation was carried out in the early hours of Tuesday, June 30, in the sea south of Gavdos, located south of Crete, leading to the rescue of approximately 70 foreign nationals. The operations were coordinated by Greece’s Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC).

According to available information, a FRONTEX surveillance aircraft initially spotted an inflatable boat carrying around 34 people approximately 20 nautical miles south of Gavdos. All those on board were safely rescued by a FRONTEX patrol vessel.

In a second operation, another inflatable boat carrying approximately 36 migrants was located about 23 nautical miles south-southeast of Gavdos. The passengers were also safely recovered by a FRONTEX vessel.

The rescued individuals were transported to the port of Gavdos. According to the Hellenic Coast Guard, weather conditions in the area were favorable, facilitating the smooth and successful completion of both rescue operations.
