A Frontex vessel struck a reef and sank on Monday outside the port of Megisti on the extreme southeast Aegean Island of Kastellorizo, with one person seriously injured according to reports. The same reports have the Estonian ambassador to Greece as being on the vessel when it sank.
The sinking was accompanied by a fire on the water’s surface from leaked petrol.
A total of five people were hurt in the incident, one seriously due to a head injury. The identity of the passenger that was seriously injured was not announced.
The circumstances of the incident and the exact causes of the collision with the reef are under investigation.
The vessel was operated by an Estonian crew.

A statement by the Greek coast read:
“Capsizing and sinking of a Frontex vessel in the sea area of Megisti. A total of five people were on board the vessel (four Estonians, including the Estonian ambassador, and one officer of the Hellenic Coast Guard, serving as a Frontex liaison). The passengers were rescued by a patrol vessel and a catamaran and were transported to the Kastellorizo Health Center. Four of the injured passengers are being transported by a Super Puma helicopter of the Hellenic Air Force to the hospital in Rhodes.”
