Greece Battles 14 Active Wildfires After 59 Break Out

Firefighters brought most of the past day's rural and forest fires under control, but crews remain deployed at 14 active fronts as authorities investigate the causes and urge the public to remain vigilant

Greek firefighters responded to 59 rural and forest wildfires across the country over the past 24 hours, with emergency crews continuing to battle 14 active fire fronts, the Fire Service said.

According to the Fire Service, 45 of the fires were contained quickly during their initial stages, preventing them from spreading further.

Firefighting operations remain underway at the remaining 14 active wildfire fronts.

Meanwhile, local fire investigation offices, together with specialized units from the Fire Service’s Arson Crimes Directorate, are investigating the causes of the fires.

The Fire Service also urged the public to exercise extreme caution and to strictly follow the instructions of the relevant authorities in the event of a wildfire to ensure their safety.
