Greece will remain on high alert for wildfires on Thursday, July 23, with authorities warning of a very high fire risk in several parts of the country as extreme heat and dry conditions continue.
According to the daily Fire Risk Forecast Map issued by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection, Attica, Evia and Rhodes are expected to face Category 4 (Very High Risk) conditions.
The warning follows Wednesday’s Category 5 (“Red Code”) alert, when extreme temperatures combined with hot, dry winds created exceptionally dangerous conditions for wildfire outbreaks.
Authorities on heightened alert
Civil Protection has notified all relevant state agencies, regional authorities and local municipalities in the affected areas to remain on increased operational readiness and respond immediately to any wildfire incidents.
Officials are urging the public to exercise extreme caution and avoid activities in rural or forested areas that could accidentally ignite a fire.
Public urged to avoid fire hazards
Authorities are advising residents not to burn dry vegetation, branches or agricultural waste, use equipment that generates sparks—such as power saws or welding tools—or light outdoor barbecues. The use of smoke in beekeeping and the careless disposal of lit cigarettes are also highlighted as potential fire hazards.
Officials also reminded the public that the seasonal ban on burning agricultural fields remains in force throughout the wildfire season.
