As Greece braces for a heatwave in the coming days, authorities held an emergency meeting at the Ministry of Environment and Energy on Sunday to coordinate preventive measures and ensure uninterrupted power supply.
The Energy Task Force meeting was convened by Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou and included representatives from the Independent Power Transmission Operator (ADMIE), the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (DEDDIE), and the Regulatory Authority for Waste, Energy, and Water (RAAEY).
The move came as the ongoing heatwave has placed Greece’s electricity grid under pressure, with high temperatures and surging demand expected to strain transmission and distribution networks.
Also present were Deputy Energy Minister Nikos Tsafos, Energy Secretary General Despina Paliarouta, RAAEY Vice President Dimitris Fourlaris, ADMIE Operations Director Dimitris Michos, and DEDDIE Network Operations Director Nikos Skiathitis.
The Task Force, which has maintained systematic coordination since April, reviewed the impact of the heatwave on underground and overhead cables and the rapid interventions made to prevent power disruptions.
According to the report, from June 1 to July 15, most power outages in Athens and Thessaloniki were restored in under two hours: 53.85% on overhead lines, 75.76% on underground lines, and 100% at high- and medium-voltage substations.
Authorities remain on high alert as temperatures are expected to remain elevated throughout the week.
The new wave of scorching temperatures in Greece is expected to last at least until Friday, July 25, 2025, with thermometers forecast to reach 43 to 44 degrees Celsius in some areas.
Authorities remain on high alert as the extreme heat continues to strain infrastructure and increase wildfire risks across the country, urging citizens to take precautionary measures to deal with the heat. The more vulnerable elderly and younger age groups are encouraged to remain hydrated, avoid unnecessary movement outside, stay in the shade, and keep in constant contact with healthcare professionals.
