Severe storms have caused extensive flooding in the western Greek city of Mesologgi, turning several streets into dangerous waterways and prompting local authorities to suspend all school operations on Friday.

The mayor of Mesologgi ordered the closure of primary and secondary schools, nurseries, daycare centers, after-school programs, the First Vocational Training Center, the Second Chance School, and the Higher Vocational Training Institute for safety reasons.

Homes and Roads Underwater

According to local reports, water has entered homes and courtyards along major streets, where residents have been struggling to keep floodwaters out.
Despite continuous pumping operations, the city’s drainage systems and pumping stations have been unable to handle the massive volume of water, leading to rising concern among residents.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as vehicles stalled in flooded streets, with some areas resembling small lakes. Emergency services remain on standby while municipal crews work to clear blocked drains and assess damage.

Authorities Urge Caution

The municipality has urged drivers to avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve, warning that flooded roads pose a significant risk to motorists.

Municipal officials continue to monitor the situation closely, coordinating with emergency response teams to address the worst-hit areas.
