The three-day international gathering of members of Hells Angels motorcycle chapters from around the world reached its peak on Sunday at the resort town of Drepano, near the extreme northwest port city of Igoumenitsa, drawing heightened law enforcement scrutiny as well as a significant influx of visitors and spending to the local economy.

Thousands of riders from across Europe and beyond are attending the event, with many expected to continue their holidays elsewhere in Greece after its conclusion. Local authorities have maintained an extensive security operation throughout the gathering, deploying additional officers and organized crime investigators to the area amid concerns linked to the club’s alleged criminal involvement in several countries.

Among others, a German national was arrested at the port of Igoumenitsa after authorities discovered an outstanding European arrest warrant issued against him by Polish authorities. The man, who is accused in a hit-and-run case, reportedly suffered a stroke while in custody and is being treated under guard at a hospital in the city of Ioannina.

Three other German riders were detained during random checks at the port.

Police said knives were found in the possession of two of them, while the third was identified as the subject of the Polish arrest warrant. On Friday, four additional motorcyclists were arrested at the Promachonas border crossing with Bulgaria after officers allegedly found a knife and a set of brass knuckles in their luggage.

Events and a festive atmosphere at Drepano

Saturday’s program featured entertainment events culminating in a concert and fireworks display. Since Friday, the streets of Igoumenitsa have been filled with large groups of riders atop high-end cruisers, mostly Harley Davidsons, accompanying engine noise and music as participants arrived from around the world.

The gathering is being held for the second time at the Drepano beach, about four kilometers from Igoumenitsa. It was organized by the Greek chapter of the club, which is based in the western city of Patras.

Local officials and organizers estimate that more than 2,000 motorcycles and approximately 5,000 participants have arrived in the area, traveling by ferry from Italy, overland through northern Greece and, in some cases, by air from Latin America and Africa. The previous gathering at the same location was held in 2015.

Reports over the past week said authorities expected one of the largest Hells Angels events ever hosted in Greece, prompting extensive preparations by police and intelligence services. The gathering attracted members from dozens of countries and was monitored closely through cooperation between Greek authorities and European law-enforcement agencies.

A large “Welcome Brothers” banner greets participants at the entrance to the event grounds, which are fenced off and guarded by private security personnel who verify attendees’ identities before entry.

Riders have arrived in groups organized by country or city of origin, some accompanied by partners and others traveling alone. Leather vests displaying chapter insignia and individual patches are a common sight throughout the venue.

Despite the club’s controversial reputation and its classification as an outlaw motorcycle gang by authorities in some countries, local business owners have described participants as polite visitors whose presence has generated substantial revenue for hotels, restaurants and other businesses. Hospitality sector representatives say many riders have favored traditional grilled meat dishes and Greek salads over the area’s seafood restaurants.

From celebration to heightened security

The club’s customized motorcycles, many extensively modified and valued at tens of thousands of euros, have become a prominent feature on roads linking Igoumenitsa with nearby destinations including Parga, Preveza and Corfu. While the overwhelming majority of participants are men, women riders have also taken part in the gathering.

One rider from Cyprus reportedly chose Drepano beach as the setting for his marriage proposal during the event.
