Lifeguard Battles Waves to Rescue Woman

The immediate intervention was captured on video as a lifeguard entered rough seas to reach a woman who had been swept away from shore and could not make it back on her own.

A lifeguard battled strong waves to rescue a woman who had been swept out to sea from a beach in Chania, Crete, in a dramatic rescue captured on video.

The incident occurred Monday morning at Kavros beach in Apokoronas, about 10 minutes before the lifeguards’ official shift was due to begin.

According to information cited by Cretalive, one of the three lifeguards at the beach noticed that a woman had been carried away by the waves and was unable to return to shore because of the strong surf.

Without hesitation, the lifeguard entered the water and headed toward the woman. As shown in the video, he reached her and brought her back to shore, where a second lifeguard helped him get the exhausted woman to safety.

One of the lifeguards involved in the rescue described the difficult conditions and explained that additional safety measures are taken on days when a red flag is flying.

“It was at the beginning of the shift, when we were opening the towers, specifically 10 minutes before the start of the shift. We always come down earlier, and on days when there are red flags, extra lifeguards are always assigned. This is very important,” he said.
