An 82-year-old man died on Sunday after being severely beaten in a dispute over a sunbed at a beach in Vouliagmeni, on the southern coast of Athens. A 76-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman have been arrested.
The incident occurred shortly before 10 a.m., when the 82-year-old reportedly got into an argument with the 76-year-old over a sunbed at the beach.
The verbal altercation quickly escalated into a physical fight. According to witnesses, a 21-year-old woman who was accompanying the 76-year-old also took part in the assault.
The elderly man sustained heavy blows and collapsed, losing consciousness.
Police were alerted at around 10 a.m., and officers rushed to the scene. The two suspects were arrested and taken to the Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni Police Station.
The victim was rushed to the Asklepieion Hospital in Voula, where doctors tried to keep him alive. Despite their efforts, he died of his injuries at around 11 a.m.
Both suspects remain in custody. A case file on homicide charges is being prepared, and they are expected to appear before judicial authorities. The manager of the beach bar was also brought to the police station to give a statement.
