A 58-year-old man has been placed in pre-trial detention after opening fire inside a nightclub in the Athens suburb of Kallithea on Sunday morning (May 10), injuring a 43-year-old female employee.

Prosecutors filed charges against him for two felony offenses and five misdemeanors.

The man faces serious charges including attempted homicide and possession of a submachine gun. He is also accused of unlawful use of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition, reckless discharge of a weapon, and illegal weapons possession.

During his testimony, the defendant claimed he had consumed an excessive amount of alcohol, was in a confused state, and had no intention of taking anyone’s life.

The Incident

The shooting unfolded at around 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, when the 58-year-old arrived at the bar, which according to reports he frequented regularly.

However, because he allegedly appeared intoxicated, employees refused to allow him inside the venue.

The man is then said to have returned to his car, retrieved a submachine gun, and come back before opening fire toward the establishment.

A 43-year-old employee was wounded in the shooting and was transported to hospital for treatment.
