A shooting incident sent shockwaves through the Tzitzifies neighborhood of Kallithea, a southern suburb of Athens, on Sunday morning, when a gunman opened fire outside a well-known nightclub.

According to initial reports, the perpetrator pulled out a Kalashnikov-type firearm and began shooting under circumstances that are still under investigation. One woman was struck by gunfire and was taken to a private clinic for treatment. At the time of the incident, both staff and customers were present at the venue, and witnesses described widespread panic as people scrambled to take cover.

The suspect was arrested at the scene.

Police Response

Authorities mobilized rapidly, with a large contingent of OPKE officers, Greece’s special anti-crime police unit, moving in to conduct an operation inside the venue. Officers are collecting evidence and shell casings, and will also seize security camera footage from the establishment to piece together the sequence of events and establish the motive behind the attack.
