Temporary changes will affect Athens Metro Line 2 over the coming days as infrastructure upgrades and telecommunications installations lead to earlier station closures and altered train operations in central sections of the network.

According to the city’s transport operator, the measures will be in place from April 21 through April 23, and again from April 26 to April 30, during late-night hours. The disruption is linked to ongoing works involving rail replacement and the installation of a 5G network system.

Stations closing earlier

Five key stations on Line 2 — Attiki, Larissa Station, Metaxourgeio, Omonia, and Panepistimio — will close at 9:40 p.m., approximately two and a half hours earlier than normal service hours.

During the same period, Omonia and Attiki stations will remain operational for another metro line that continues to run through those hubs.

Train services on Line 2 will continue to operate in two separate sections: from Anthoupoli to Sepolia, and from Syntagma to Elliniko, effectively splitting the line during the works.

Last train departures

Before the early closure, the final departures will run at staggered times from different stations toward both directions of the line, with the last services leaving central stops shortly after 9:30 p.m.

The schedule includes the final trains departing from Sepolia, Attiki, Larissa Station, Metaxourgeio, Omonia, Panepistimio, and Syntagma toward the northern and southern terminals within a short time window.

Temporary bus replacement service

To support passengers affected by the disruption, a temporary bus route will operate between Syntagma and Agios Antonios metro stations.

The replacement service will stop at key points along the affected corridor, including central city locations and major transfer hubs, with slight adjustments to some stop placements to accommodate traffic conditions.

Transport authority statement

The transport operator acknowledged the inconvenience caused to passengers but emphasized that the works are necessary for the modernization and long-term improvement of the metro system.

“These interventions are essential for infrastructure upgrades that will improve daily commuting in the future,” the authority noted in its announcement.
