Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis congratulated Apostolos Christou and Apostolos Siskos on their major achievements, in a post on Facebook.
The prime minister highlighted the two athletes’ medals, which, together with the rest of the Greek delegation, put Greek swimming at the top of Europe. He also mentioned the national water polo team’s recent win of the World Cup.
In the same post, Mitsotakis announced that the government has decided Greece will bid to host the 2028 Men’s European Water Polo Championship, following a request from the Swimming Federation.
He said hosting such an event would give the country a major opportunity to once again be at the center of a big international sporting event, while also showcasing both Greek athletes and the country’s upgraded Olympic facilities, particularly those built for water sports.
The prime minister closed his post by saying he hopes for even more strong sporting moments and Greek victories, this time “in Greek waters.”
