The case involving two remanded physicians in connection with the death of Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis has prompted an intervention by Greece’s Authority for Combating Money Laundering.
Acting on the orders of the authority’s head, honorary deputy Supreme Court prosecutor Charalambos Vourliotis, an investigation will begin immediately, focusing on the two doctors, husband and wife, and examining whether the offense of money laundering may have been committed.
As part of the investigation, all information that has emerged publicly will be assessed, while authority officials will conduct a comprehensive examination of the financial records and assets of the two remanded medical professionals.
Under Greek law, if evidence of money laundering emerges, the head of the independent authority may order a freeze of assets and forward the relevant information to a prosecutor.
According to reports, the authority’s investigation will initially focus on professional activities the two had pursued in the past.
The physicians, Ilias Theodoropoulos and Ioanna Gaka, have been remanded in custody and face homicide charges with possible intent in connection with Mazonakis’ death. A forensic examination established myocardial ischemia, but the precise cause of death remained undetermined pending toxicology and histology results. Authorities have also been examining the circumstances surrounding a medical procedure, plasmapheresis, including its authorization and the equipment used. An initial on-site inspection was conducted at the medical office on Sept. 10 under a prosecutor’s order.
