A three-year-old girl is in critical condition in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of the University Hospital of Heraklion after being transferred from Chania with serious injuries that have prompted a police investigation and the arrest of her mother.
The child was taken to hospital late on Thursday after losing consciousness at a playground, according to reports. Medical examinations revealed injuries severe enough to raise immediate concern among doctors.
Serious Injuries Raise Alarm
Hospital director Giorgos Chalkiadakis said the girl suffered a subdural hematoma and multiple bruises, while doctors also identified evidence of an older fracture.
The child was initially brought to Chania General Hospital by her mother, where medical staff quickly assessed the severity of her condition and provided emergency treatment. After her condition was stabilized, doctors decided she should be transferred to Heraklion for specialized care and close monitoring in the pediatric intensive care unit.
“The child’s condition appears to have stabilized, but it remains critical,” Chalkiadakis said.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine how the child sustained her injuries and are examining all possible scenarios.
Investigators are seeking to establish whether the injuries resulted from an accident or a case of domestic violence. Officials noted that the family is large and have not ruled out the possibility of an accidental incident.
The child reportedly lost consciousness while at a playground before being rushed to hospital by her mother.
Mother Arrested
The Chania Security Police Department has taken charge of the preliminary investigation to clarify the exact circumstances surrounding the case.
According to local reports, the child’s mother has been arrested on charges related to child endangerment.
Police and prosecutorial authorities have been informed, while investigators continue to gather evidence and examine all available information regarding the circumstances that led to the girl’s hospitalization.
