More than one million owners of private vehicles in Greece failed to meet the Dec. 31, 2025, deadline for paying road fees, although some 209,000 will avoid fines, given that they declared their vehicles as inactive, according to the tax bureau (AADE).

For the latter, fines – gradually increasing over time – are foreseen.

Conversely, road fees for 5.94 million vehicles were paid before the deadline – out of 6.75 million in the country (88%).

Under the new fine framework, the first penalty is 25% of the total owed of the fees are paid up until early February. Lower fines are foreseen for public use vehicles that haven’t paid road fees, such as taxis, trucks and buses.
