Greek police arrested a 22-year-old Spanish woman at Heraklion International Airport on the island of Crete after allegedly discovering more than 19 kilograms of cannabis concealed in her luggage, authorities said on Thursday.

The suspect is believed to be a member of an international drug trafficking network, according to the Hellenic Police.

The arrest followed a targeted operation by officers from the Heraklion Narcotics Unit, who had received intelligence indicating that the woman was transporting a large quantity of cannabis into Greece by air on behalf of another Spanish national for distribution through other traffickers.

The coordinated operation, carried out with the assistance of officers from the airport police station, led to the suspect’s arrest shortly after she arrived on a flight from abroad.

A search of her luggage uncovered 19.1 kilograms of unprocessed cannabis hidden inside a suitcase, police said. Officers also seized 210 euros ($246) in cash and a mobile phone.

The investigation is being led by the Heraklion Narcotics Unit as authorities seek to identify other individuals linked to the alleged trafficking network.

The suspect appeared before a public prosecutor on Thursday and was granted until July 28 to prepare her defense before giving formal testimony.
