Police have dismantled a criminal network accused of distributing large quantities of illegal cigarettes over the past year, in an operation that resulted in arrests and multiple seizures.
According to authorities, the group is believed to have trafficked approximately 240,000 packs of illicit cigarettes since March last year, causing financial losses to the state estimated at nearly €1 million due to unpaid taxes and duties.
Two men, aged 41 and 52, were arrested during a coordinated police operation involving specialized units. Investigators say the network operated with a structured division of roles, enabling the storage and distribution of illegal tobacco products across multiple regions.
The 41-year-old suspect allegedly used two residential properties as storage locations, supplying the contraband on a weekly basis. The 52-year-old is believed to have handled distribution, delivering the products to a network of customers across a wide geographical area.
Searches carried out at properties uncovered thousands of illegal cigarette packs and tobacco products, along with vehicles, mobile phones, cash, and handwritten notes believed to be linked to the operation. Authorities also reported the seizure of a weapon.
The suspects now face charges including participation in a criminal organization, violations of customs regulations, and weapons-related offenses. They have been referred to the competent prosecutorial authorities.
