A major rescue operation is currently underway in northwestern Greece after an American tourist fell over 40 meters while hiking through the Vikos Gorge, one of the most renowned natural landmarks in the region of Zagori, near the city of Ioannina.
According to local reports, the woman lost her balance while navigating the challenging terrain of the gorge and fell into a remote and difficult-to-access area. National broadcaster ERT says she is severely injured and unconcious. The incident occurred earlier today and prompted an immediate response from rescue teams.
Demanding Trail Poses Risks
The injured woman was part of a group of American hikers exploring the Vikos Gorge, a striking natural formation known for its steep cliffs, rugged trails, and breathtaking views. While the gorge attracts thousands of visitors every year, the full hike is not for the faint-hearted. The trail typically takes about seven hours to complete and includes sections that are narrow, steep, and physically demanding.
Coordinated Rescue Effort
Responders from Greece’s 5th Special Disaster Response Unit (EMAK), the Mountain Search and Rescue Team (EMODE), and local residents familiar with the terrain quickly mobilized to reach the injured hiker. Their efforts are focused on accessing the exact location of the fall, which is reportedly difficult to approach due to the area’s steep and rocky topography.
Authorities have also requested a helicopter to assist in the operation, given the challenging conditions and the urgency of transporting the woman safely for medical treatment.
Situation Under Development
The situation is ongoing. According to the latest updates, the hiker is reportedly unconscious and seriously injured, and a rescue operation is currently in progress.
Vikos Gorge, located within the Vikos–Aoös National Park, is considered one of the deepest gorges in the world in proportion to its width. Its unique geological and ecological features make it a popular destination for adventure travelers and nature lovers alike — but also demand careful preparation and caution from those attempting to traverse it.
