Temperatures have dropped in several cities and towns across northern Greece, in recent days, prompting households to seek more affordable ways to stay warm as energy costs continue to rise.
According to To Vima, demand for firewood has increased in Attica, with consumers placing their orders earlier than usual this year.
Firewood merchant Giorgos Paschalidis said the average price is currently around 150 euros per cubic meter, although rates vary depending on the supplier. On the market, firewood sells from approximately 120 to 170 euros per cubic meter.
Merchants estimate that a household using a high-efficiency fireplace needs around four to five cubic meters of firewood to get through the winter. At current prices, that translates into an estimated cost of about 500 euros, depending on consumption and where the wood is purchased. Among the most popular varieties are oak, beech, pine, and fir, while olive wood commands a higher price. Oak remains the preferred choice for many consumers because it burns for longer and is considered more economical.
In Western Macedonia, meanwhile, falling temperatures have already prompted residents to light fireplaces and wood-burning stoves. Residents in the region traditionally place their orders well in advance of winter. However, the rising cost of living has delayed purchases this year, resulting in a sharp increase in demand over the past week. Timber merchant Dimitris Tsouloufias said firewood prices in Western Macedonia currently range from 150 to 160 euros per ton, about 10 euros higher than last year.
