The investigation into the death of a 68-year-old man in the northern Greek city of Serres has taken a dramatic turn after forensic findings concluded that he was the victim of a homicide.
The man, who lived alone, was found dead on the couch in his apartment by his son last Saturday afternoon. After discovering his father, the son alerted emergency medical services and police.
“I went inside, called out, ‘Dad,’ but he didn’t respond. I opened the door and saw him sitting on the couch, dead,” the son told Greek broadcaster MEGA.
The victim was taken to a hospital, where his death was confirmed. From the outset, authorities ordered a forensic examination to determine the exact cause of death after visible injuries were found on his body.
The autopsy overturned initial assumptions, concluding that the man died as a result of a criminal act.
According to the forensic report, the victim suffered multiple injuries to the abdomen, believed to have been inflicted with a hammer. Extensive internal bleeding was identified as the cause of death.
Police are also focusing on the fact that investigators found no signs of forced entry or disturbance inside the apartment, a detail that could prove crucial to the investigation.
Authorities are examining whether the killing may be connected to a burglary that took place at the victim’s home a few days earlier.
The apartment has since been sealed off while forensic specialists search for fingerprints, DNA evidence, and any other clues that could help solve the case.
