Severe weather is sweeping across parts of Greece, triggering floods, landslides and widespread damage to roads, homes and businesses, while several communities remain cut off and some areas have been placed under a state of emergency.
Authorities issued emergency weather warnings for heavy rain, thunderstorms and gale-force winds, placing many regions on alert as conditions worsened.
Villages cut off, families struggle to move
In western parts of the country, landslides destroyed key road links, isolating Mazaráki and five other settlements in the Pineia area. The main road serving the villages collapsed, leaving residents with limited access.
Students managed to reach school in the morning, but by midday the road was still closed. Children returned home by crossing fields on foot, with parents and residents carrying them through sinking, muddy ground to reach the residential side of the village.
Flooding hits coastal cities
In Patras, flooding forced authorities to shut down both directions of traffic on a major coastal road after large volumes of water covered the pavement. Although conditions appeared to improve earlier in the day, the road flooded again hours later, with water spreading into nearby streets and worrying residents and business owners.
In Sagiada in northwestern Greece, the sea pushed inland, flooding shops and damaging businesses along the waterfront. Tree trunks and debris also piled up at the Ragiou dam in the same region, raising the immediate risk of the Kalamas River overflowing.
Dramatic rescues and wind damage
On the island of Astypalaia, a fisherman jumped into rough waters to save his boat, pulling it by rope to a sheltered spot. He made it safely back to shore and managed to protect his vessel.
In Heraklion, powerful winds shattered the windows of a business, startling the owner.
States of emergency and evacuations
Local communities in Naxos were declared in a state of emergency after intense weather hit the island in recent days. In the coastal area of Agios Prokopios, parts of the road have collapsed and remain suspended in places.
The municipality of Katerini has also requested a state of emergency declaration due to damage along its coastline.
A 40-ton rock detached from a mountainside in Katakolo and is being held in place by cables to prevent it from crashing down toward the harbor. About 10 homes below the rock were evacuated as a precaution, and the main road to the local port authority remains closed.
In the Taygetus mountain area near Kalamata, authorities ordered the precautionary evacuation of two settlements due to landslides and ground subsidence, with the last elderly residents moved out Monday afternoon.
Rivers overflow, neighborhoods isolated
After successive waves of bad weather, a controlled water release from a local dam toward the Pinios River led to the river overflowing, turning entire areas into vast lakes. In the town of Vartholomio, a whole neighborhood remains cut off by floodwaters, with some residents stranded in their homes since the previous day.
Crews are using heavy machinery to clear debris left behind by the storms.
Roads collapse across islands and mountains
On the island of Corfu, extensive damage has hit both main and rural road networks after unusually heavy rainfall. In the Boukari area, a coastal road linking southeastern communities has collapsed in many spots, making it nearly impassable and dangerous.
At Arillas beach, a popular tourist area, sections of roadway have been completely destroyed as streams and rivers eroded the ground, creating hazards for cars and pedestrians.
In the mountainous Tzoumerka region, the Pramanta–Ioannina provincial road was split in two by a major collapse. A passing car was caught at the moment of subsidence Sunday morning, and the driver escaped at the last moment but was left in shock. The vehicle was later removed by crane. Aerial images show about 60 meters (nearly 200 feet) of roadway have sunk.
Authorities continue to monitor conditions as severe weather impacts multiple parts of the country, with damage assessments and safety measures ongoing.
