An incident occurred late Thursday morning at Athens International Airport (AIA) when the pilot of an Airbus aircraft contacted air traffic control requesting an emergency landing, according to reports from Greece’s state broadcaster, ERT.
The aircraft, an Airbus A319 carrying 150 passengers, had issued a “FULL EMERGENCY” signal after smoke was detected in the cockpit. The nature of the flight—whether scheduled, charter, or otherwise—has not yet been disclosed.
As a precaution, firefighting units were immediately deployed to the runway. Fortunately, their intervention was not required, as the plane landed safely just minutes later, bringing the alert to an end.
Airport operations, which had been temporarily suspended, are now gradually returning to normal following the emergency protocol.
