Snow has been falling since the early hours of the morning across many areas of the Ioannina prefecture in northwestern Greece, as well as in the mountainous parts of neighboring Arta, creating a wintry scene across much of the Epirus region.
Heavy snowfall reached the city of Ioannina itself earlier today, marking a significant intensification of the weather. Ioannina, the capital of Epirus and a major urban center is not always accustomed to sustained snow in its downtown areas, making the current conditions especially notable for residents and visitors alike.

To keep transportation networks open, the Civil Protection Authority of the Region of Epirus has deployed 28 snow-removal machines, working continuously to ensure that roads remain clear and safe. Their efforts are focused on both urban streets and the wider road network that connects Ioannina with surrounding towns and villages.
At the same time, municipal authorities across the region are operating their own equipment to guarantee that access to remote villages is maintained despite the worsening weather. Many of these communities lie in mountainous terrain, where snowfall can quickly make roads impassable if not promptly cleared.
Police and civil protection officials are urging all drivers to travel with snow chains, a common winter requirement in Greece during severe weather. Extra measures are in place along key transport routes, particularly at the Malakasi toll station beyond the mountain town of Metsovo. There, traffic police from Ioannina are providing instructions to motorists traveling on the Egnatia Odos, the major highway that links northwestern Greece with the rest of the country.
Authorities are advising travelers to follow official guidance closely as snowfall continues, especially in higher elevations where conditions can change rapidly.
