If You See Fire Nearby
– Leave immediately if safe to do so.
– Do not use elevators.
– Once in a safe location, call the fire service on 199.
Be ready to share:
– Your exact location
– Direction of the fire and wind
– Type of trees or vegetation in the area.
If Fire is Approaching Your Home
-Close all windows and doors
-Block gaps with wet towels or blankets to keep smoke out
-Remove curtains, drapes, and flammable materials
-Move furniture away from windows
-Close interior doors to slow the spread of fire
-Fill bathtubs, sinks, and buckets with water
-Gather everyone in one room
-Turn off gas and liquid fuel supplies
-Open gates or driveways to allow firefighter access
-Turn on indoor and outdoor lights for visibility
-Do not leave the house unless it’s completely safe
-Never try to leave in a vehicle unless absolutely necessary.
If You’re Ordered to Evacuate or Receive a 112 Text Message
-Feel the door with the back of your hand before opening
-If there’s smoke, cover your nose and mouth, stay low and close to the ground
-Use one hand to follow the wall and crawl to the nearest exit
-If your clothes catch fire: Stop, Drop, and Roll
Fire Prevention Outdoors
-Never burn trash, leaves, or branches
-Avoid campfires or BBQs in or near wooded or dry areas
-Do not throw lit cigarettes on the ground
-Take your rubbish with you and don’t leave behind anything flammable.
If You Live Near a Forested Area
-Install smoke detectors, manual pull stations, and fire extinguishers
-Keep your property cleared of dry vegetation
-Stay informed via emergency alerts (112 in Greece)
-Always have a safety kit ready with flashlight, batteries, whistle, and water bottle.
