Greece remains under the grip of an intense heatwave, which is expected to continue until Saturday. According to meteo.gr (National Observatory of Athens), the country is experiencing extreme thermal stress due to unusually high temperatures, with maximum values reaching up to 42°C in several regions on Thursday and Friday.

According to the HEAT-ALARM bioclimatic warning system, the situation is particularly serious:

On Thursday (June 26), extreme thermal stress and related health risks are forecast for parts of Macedonia and Thrace, while very high thermal stress is expected in Thessaly and the Peloponnese.

On Friday (June 27), the threat intensifies, with extreme heat strain forecast for Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaly, Epirus, the Peloponnese, and the Eastern Aegean islands. Very high thermal stress will extend across much of the country.

By Monday, conditions are expected to gradually improve. Temperatures will begin to ease, with most areas seeing highs around 34–35°C, while western Greece may still experience localized peaks of 37–38°C.

This marks a moderate decline from the peak of the heatwave, but temperatures will still be above seasonal averages and may continue to pose health risks, especially in urban environments affected by the urban heat island effect.

Key Points for Travelers and Residents:

  • Extreme heat and thermal stress will persist across much of the country through Saturday (June 28).
  • Monday (June 30) brings some relief, but hot conditions will remain, especially in western regions.
  • Avoid outdoor activity during peak heat hours, stay hydrated, and seek cool or shaded areas.
  • Heat-related health risks remain a concern, particularly for vulnerable groups.

This heatwave is being driven by warm air masses moving across the Mediterranean and parts of Europe, with temperatures at 1,500 meters above sea level measuring 10–12°C above normal.

Please continue to monitor local weather updates and follow health advisories to stay safe during this period of extreme heat.
